Since Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 40 area service members have been killed in combat in Afghanistan or Iraq:

Army Spc. Marc Anderson, 30, formerly of Alliance. Killed March 3, 2002, when the helicopter on which he was riding was hit by fire and crashed in Afghanistan.

Army Staff Sgt. Richard Ramey, 27, of Perry Township. Killed Feb. 8, 2004, in Mahmudiyah, Iraq, when a roadside bomb he was disarming exploded.
Marine Cpl. Andrew Brownfield, 24, a North High School graduate from Akron. Killed March 18, 2004, during a mortar attack at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq.
Army Spc. Jesse Buryj, 21, of Canton. Killed in friendly fire in Karbala, Iraq, May 5, 2004.
Army Sgt. Michael Barkey, 21, of Lawrence Township. Killed when his truck was attacked in Iraq on July 7, 2004.
Army Pfc. Devin Grella, 21, of Medina Township. Killed in Iraq when his truck was struck by an explosive device on Sept. 6, 2004.

Marine Sgt. Michael W. Finke Jr., 28, who lived many years in Medina County. He died in a helicopter crash in Iraq on Jan. 26, 2005.
Marine Cpl. Michael B. Lindemuth, 27, with Akron’s Weapons Company Reserve unit. He was killed April 13, 2005, during a mortar attack at Camp Hit, Iraq.
Marine Cpl. Dustin Derga, 24, of Columbus, whose father and stepmother live in Lake Township. Killed by enemy small arms fire on May 8, 2005.
Army 1st Lt. Aaron Nicholas Seesan, 24, of Massillon. Killed when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb on May 22, 2005.
Marine Sgt. Jeffrey Boskovitch, 25, whose father lives in Cuyahoga Falls. Among five members of a Northeast Ohio unit killed in an ambush in Iraq on Aug. 1, 2005.
Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Nathan Deyarmin Jr., 22, of Tallmadge. Among five members of a Northeast Ohio unit killed in an ambush in Iraq on Aug. 1, 2005.
Marine Lance Cpl. Edward August “Augie” Schroeder, 23, who worked in Streetsboro. He was killed with 14 others when their amphibious assault vehicle struck explosives on Aug. 3, 2005.
Army Sgt. Bryan W. Large, 31, of Cuyahoga Falls. Killed in his second tour when a bomb exploded near his vehicle on Oct. 3, 2005.
Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel McVicker, 20, of Alliance. Killed Oct. 6, 2005, when his vehicle was hit by an explosive device.
Marine Sgt. Jeremy E. Murray, 27, of Atwater Township. Killed in a roadside bombing near Haditha, Iraq, on Nov. 16, 2005.

Marine Lance Cpl. David Shaun Parr, 22, of Akron and Barberton. Killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq on Feb. 6, 2006.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Daniel B. Crabtree, 31, of Green. Ohio Army National Guard’s Special Forces Group, killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq on June 8, 2006.
Marine Cpl. Joseph Tomci, 21, of Stow. Second tour in Iraq, killed in a roadside bombing on Aug. 2, 2006.
Marine Sgt. Justin T. Walsh, 24, of Cuyahoga Falls. Third tour in Iraq, died Oct. 11, 2006, six days after the bomb he was defusing exploded.
Marine Pvt. Heath D. Warner, 19, of Canton. Killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq on Nov. 22, 2006.
Navy Hospitalman Matthew G. Conte, 22, of Streetsboro. Served in Afghanistan; killed by an explosive device in Iraq on Feb. 1, 2007.
Army Sgt. Jeremy Barnett, 27, of Mineral City. Injured in a roadside bombing in Iraq, died on Feb. 24, 2007.
Navy Hospitalman Lucas “Luke” Emch, 21, of Brimfield Township. Killed in a roadside bombing March 2, 2007.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Matthew J. Kuglics, 25, of Green. Second tour of Iraq, killed in a roadside bombing on June 5, 2007.
Army Sgt. Cory Endlich, 23, of Massillon. Killed in Taji, Iraq, by a sniper on June 9, 2007.
Army Cpl. Zachary “Zach” Grass, 22, of Sugar Creek Township in Stark County. Killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq June 16, 2007.
Army Cpl. Jason Hernandez, 21, of Streetsboro. Killed by a roadside bomb in Mosul, Iraq, Sept. 7, 2007.
Army Cpl. Benjamin Charles Dillon, 22, of Edinburg Township in Portage County. Fourth Middle East deployment, killed by small arms fire in Iraq on Oct. 7, 2007.

Army Sgt. Nicholas A. Casey, 22, of Canton. Served in Iraq, killed in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber on Oct. 27, 2008.
CIA Security Officer Scott Michael Roberson, 39, formerly of Franklin Township. Killed Dec. 30, 2009, in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Robert L. Gilbert II, 28, of Richfield. Three tours in Iraq; on his second tour in Afghanistan when he was killed March 16, 2010, in an ambush.
Army Staff Sgt. Kevin James Kessler, 32, of East Canton. Served two tours in Iraq and was killed in Afghanistan by an roadside bomb on Aug. 30, 2010.
Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt, 25, of Akron. Killed in a combat operation in Afghanistan on Dec. 6, 2010.
Army Capt. Joshua McClimans, 30, of Bath Township. Served in Iraq before he was killed by mortar fire in Afghanistan on April 22, 2011.
Army 1st Lt. John Runkle Jr., 27, of West Salem in Wayne County. Served in Iraq; killed in an attack in Afghanistan on May 26, 2011.
Army Spc. Adam Hamilton, 22, of Kent. Killed by an explosive device in Afghanistan on May 28, 2011.
Marine Sgt. Daniel J. Patron, 26, of Perry Township. Killed in combat in Afghanistan on Aug. 6, 2011.
